Cap / Stem features: This strain produces beautiful pale fruits with wide saucer-shaped caps. John Allen meticulously tracked this strain’s progress in his grow log, which tracks the culture across at least eight distinct flushes over roughly 70 days. The early flushes show the characteristic caramel-to-rust-brown caps with fine white speckling, thick white stipes, and vigorous, clustered fruiting, with pins emerging from all sides of the substrate cake by the second flush. As the grow progressed, the mycelium cake naturally broke into separate chunks, yet each piece continued producing fruiting bodies well into later flushes, underscoring the strain’s tenacity and persistence. Specimens from the 5th flush show the classic blue bruising at the base of the stipe, a hallmark of the species.

Lineage: Originally discovered in the Tak province of Thailand by John Allen. with a team from Chulalongkorn University. After a quick side trip across the Thai-Burmese border to renew his visa, Allen was beckoned by colleague Dr. Prakitsin Sihanonth around the side of their lodge where a single specimen had pushed up through the grass near a shed of powdered buffalo manure the park gardeners used as fertilizer. That lone mushroom would become the founding specimen of the Tak strain.
